A couple years ago I got a letter from my bank offering a discount for using Liberty Mutual Auto Insurance. They weren’t asking me to switch, just letting me know that because I was a member at the bank, I would get a better rate than others. When I moved to Ohio and Geico first failed to update my address (that I had given them previously) then failed to send me a renewal notice (I didn’t realize they had not updated my contact info until I policy expired because I pay upfront each year) and THEN had the gall to almost double my rate because I had “allowed my insurance to lapse” I knew it was time for a change.

I was driving a 1976 Toyota FJ45 Landcruiser at the time (that’s the four door model that was only made for a couple years). Everywhere I checked was wanting over $600 a for six months of minimum coverage on a 30 year vehicle! Then I remembered the note I got from my bank and gave them a call to get Liberty Mutual’s number. About the same time, my future father in law bought a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee for us as a wedding present, so I really needed some coverage.

Liberty Mutual was very helpful. I got a year’s policy for less than $400 and have stayed with them for the past 2 years without any increases other than those I asked for. When someone attempted to steal my Jeep in March of this year, I didn’t have the coverage for the repairs. However, I had since bought Renter’s Insurance through LM and so that covered everything stolen from my truck. The check I got (recieved 3 days after I completed the filing process) for the stolen items was enough to restore my Jeep to mint condition, install an alarm system AND replace most of the things that I really wanted from the theft. It took a bit of time to get that check, but that was because I was too busy to go out and get a detailed list of the replacement cost of the items stolen. That’s right, I said replacement cost, not depreciated cost. I also get a multi rate discount for having Renter’s Insurance.

Installing the alarm system gained me yet another discount and when I put my Landcruiser (affectionately named The Beast), I got yet another discount. I upgraded my coverage on the Jeep to include everything but collision and it merely increased my rate by a couple hundred each year. I even have Life Insurance for my mother, wife and myself through this company, which (you guessed it) earned me yet another discount on all my policies.

I have never had any trouble with this company. Even when I didn’t have the roadside assistance on my trucks, they would still dispatch someone to help me with the problem. I just had to pay the full price, is all. I know that as long as I have this company covering me, my property is safe and that feeling of security is something that no amount of money can buy. The trick is, I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for it.
